Dark Video Games

Dark Video Games

It is rare to find a video game that is not dark and disturbing. Some of the most popular games are dark, but none of them are as extreme as Sad Satan, a PC game that features violent gore, reversed audio loops, and recordings of Charles Manson. Nevertheless, the PC game stands out in many ways.

Following are brief descriptions of the most popular dark video games

 Outlast

Outlast is a survival horror video game where you must survive in a confined area. The game features elements of the 'Find A to Open B' mechanic, which encourages you to search for items. It also has sections called 'boxes,' in which you are confined to a certain area.

Pathologic 2

Pathologic 2 is a dark video game that takes place in a world where time is of the essence. Days and nights are cyclical in this world, with most of the world's activities happening during the day. People move around the city, shop for supplies, play in the park, and generally go about their lives. Then, there is the night when many events in the game are locked away.

Shadow of the Colossus

In the first game, the protagonist, Wander, is thrust into an unfamiliar land full of giants and wildlife. The story of the game revolves around Wander's quest to save a girl named Mono. She was sacrificed to fulfill a curse, and the game begins with Wander attempting to resurrect her. As he journeys through this ancient land, he's aided by his faithful horse, Agro. Though the English-language version refers to Agro as a male horse, director Fumito Ueda has stated that the game's horse is female.

Alone in the Dark

The Alone in the Dark series of video games has a long history of being inspired by horror films. The first game, released in 1992, took inspiration from the works of H.R. Giger and H.P. Lovecraft and was an experimental game. The series was overshadowed, however, by other survival horror games such as Resident Evil. Among the other notable titles in this series are Dead Space and Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.

Manhunt 2

Dark video games often play with the notions of control and player sympathy. For example, Manhunt is set in a world filled with unsympathetic characters. Its main character, James Earl Cash, is a death-row inmate who must kill gang members in horrifying ways while filming every move. The game's sequel, Manhunt 2, replaces the urban environment with a mental asylum.

Tyranny

Tyranny is a nonlinear action RPG in which the forces of evil win a grand war against humanity. You play as Kyros the Overlord and command his merciless armies to rule the world. Your actions will have far-reaching effects, changing both the landscape and the people.

Hollow Knight

If you're into dark video games and Tim Burton, you might want to give Hollow Knight a try. Its atmospheric visuals are reminiscent of the Nightmare Before Christmas and the story line is dark and bleak. Despite its dark environment, the game has moments of hope. The game features a massive world and puzzles that reward exploration. In addition, Hollow Knight allows you to collect charms to give you special powers. You can mix and match them to create unique combinations of abilities.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Inquisition is an action-adventure power fantasy video game. It is similar to The Elder Scrolls and Skyrim but is quite different. Dragon Age: Inquisition features a world that is larger than the previous games and features detailed enemies and hidden caves. It also offers intense strategic combat and an optional strategic view of the game's world.
